The Vet Med literature estimates that about 30% of dogs are overweight. Obesity in dogs contributes to many health issues, just like in humans. Your dog’s obesity can cause damage to joints and ligaments, contribute to heart disease, cause high blood pressure, and negatively affect liver function – to name just a few!
To help you determine whether your dog’s weight is within a normal range, you can use the Purina Body Condition System, a nine point scale (see below). When assessing my canine clients, I always evaluate their weight and provide appropriate advice to the owners.
If you want assistance with weight control in your dog, please consult your veterinarian.
